ForbesToday’s NYT Connections Hints And Answers For Wednesday, June 17By Kris HoltForbesToday’s NYT Connections Answers Explained For Wednesday, June 17 (#1,102)By Kris Holt
Hey there, Connectors! I hope you’ve had a fabulous week thus far.
There are a lot of very valid reasons to dislike the World Cup, but as someone who grew up in one of the participating countries and now lives in another (and as a fan of football in general), I can’t help myself. By far the best thing about the tournament is the way in which fans from all around the world come together to have a good time. I’ve seen videos of Mexico and South Korea fans partying together, and Brazil and Morocco supporters celebrating with New York Knicks fans after the NBA title triumph.
My fellow Scots have had a great and (to the best of my knowledge) unproblematic time in New England so far. They’re terrific ambassadors for their country. Sure, many of them drink a lot and sing loudly, but they rarely ever cause trouble. They’re the friendliest bunch you’ll ever meet and always raise funds for local charities where ever Scotland play. The Tartan Army are the best fans in the world. Could not be prouder of them.
Before we start, I want to highlight the rad community we have on Discord, where we chat about Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. It’s a lovely group of folks. You’re more than welcome to join us.
Also, my weekend editions of this column are available over on my newsletter, Pastimes. If you enjoy the intros and recommendations in my Connections columns, I publish longer pieces along similar lines on Pastimes as well. I think you’d dig them.
Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Thursday, June 18 are coming right up. Let’s get rolling!
NYT Connections – How To Play
Connections is a free New York Times daily word game that you can play on the NYT’s website or Games app. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections archive, which includes every previous game.
Connections presents you with a grid of 16 words (sometimes phrases, symbols or numbers). The aim is to arrange them into four groups of four. You don’t know how they hit together or what the category for each group is: that’s what you have to figure out.
There’s only one correct solution and there are often red herrings. You can guess incorrectly three times. A fourth wrong guess, and it’s game over.
Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to deduce, followed by blue, green and purple. Often, the yellow and green groups have synonyms, the blues have cultural references and the purples have some kind of wordplay involved. But this is not a hard and fast rule. Be ready for curveballs – part of the fun of Connections is in how the NYT shakes things up to keep you on your toes.
As with Wordle and similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends using an emoji-based grid. The game tracks your progress too.
Many players take pride in having long win streaks or getting a reverse rainbow – correctly guessing the purple, blue, green and yellow groups in that order with no mistakes. That adds an extra little challenge.

MANDELA and GANDHI made the blues pretty straightforward, I felt. The yellows were up next after I realized BOOTCAMP was the fourth word I needed. I made a slip before that.
What I assumed had to be the greens then jelled together. However, I had to slide the purples through first (they refer to hammer, jigsaw, pliers and wrench). Submitting the greens extended my win streak to 473.

P.S. Thinking about Bond themes after recommending the Lana Del Ray song recorded for the 007 First Light game the other day, I remembered the one Billie Eilish did for No Time To Die. That led me into the other song for which Eilish won an Oscar, "What Was I Made For?" from Barbie. She’s a generational talent, a tremendous artist, and this is an absolutely gorgeous song:
Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!
