The official press release stated, “Academy members must now watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round for the Oscars.”
Given that the Oscars have been a thing for 90+ years, people were understandably pretty annoyed that this rule has only now been implemented. However, unfortunately, things just got way more disappointing.
This week, Variety published an article centered around the “loopholes” some Academy members had already found to avoid watching all of the Oscar-nominated films.
The Oscars have finally arrived! Keep up with the losers, winners, and best dressed celebs right here.
The outlet reported, “Today, some members, particularly in the Executive and Marketing and PR branches, simply press play on the Academy app to satisfy the system’s viewing requirement — then mute the audio or switch tabs. ‘The app only needs to see that you watched it,’ says one voter. ‘It doesn’t know if you’re sitting there.’”
“Another member admits they hit play before leaving the house to go to work,” the outlet added.
Reacting to this online, tons of fans have questioned why people who aren’t interested in watching all of the Oscar-nominated films are members of the Academy.
“why do you have a career in film if you dont care about movies,” someone said, while another person echoed: “why are you working in this industry then.”
“If you’re this passionate about not watching movies why the fuck are you an Oscar voter?” one more user questioned.
