Perry Minasian's GM tenure with Angels was even worse than it looked

The Los Angeles Angels fired general manager Perry Minasian this past Friday, ending his horrific tenure with the AL West club.

Minasian was hired in 2020. During his first five full seasons, the Angels did not make the postseason.

They didn't come that close, either.

Besides the lack of success on the field, the Angels have made little to no advancements in any other facet of the organization since Minasian's hiring.

"However, the results were abysmal. The Angels never won more than 77 games in a season. Minasian never signed a major free agent, never made a blockbuster trade, and didn’t have much success in the draft despite having five top 13 picks in five drafts," The Athletic's Jim Bowden wrote Thursday.

It gets even worse.

"He went through five different managers and finished with a dismal 392-500 record," Bowden added. "He rarely talked to the media unless it was off the record and always seemed to imply that the things he didn’t do were because of ownership."

It's inexcusable not to find a way to field a competitive club around generational talents like Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.

But that's exactly what Minasian managed to do. The Angels held on to Ohtani during his last year with the club in 2023, despite being far out of the postseason race.

Ohtani's potential trade package would have been tremendous. Maybe, just maybe, a few of those players could have helped the Angels turn their poor play at the Major League level around.

The Angels’ decision to hire an experienced front office leader in John Mozeliak as their interim GM is the best decision they’ve made in a long time," Bowden added. "He’s a proven executive who led the St. Louis Cardinals to 10 postseason appearances and a 2011 title. He also oversaw 15 consecutive winning seasons. He’s a leader who knows how to surround himself with more leaders and give them the autonomy to do their jobs."

Minasian was anything but a solid GM. It cost the Angels and their fans years of suffering for no good reason.
