The Texas Rangers are in first place in the AL West with a 43-42 record.
Somehow, the Rangers have managed to do that despite owning a run differential of -5.
For Texas, one area of potential need at this year's trade deadline is the bullpen, writes MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
"Texas relievers have a 3.82 ERA, the fifth-best mark in the AL, but the Rangers lack many swing-and-miss arms in the bullpen, something they should look to add during the next month," Feinsand wrote.
The Rangers could use more velocity in the bullpen to generate swing-and-misses. There's plenty of whiff potential in the starting rotation, with Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob deGrom.
"The Rangers’ 7.8 strikeouts per nine ranks last among all AL bullpens, so adding some hard-throwing, high-leverage relievers could be in the cards," Feinsand added. "Perhaps a reunion with Aroldis Chapman? It worked in 2023, so you never know."
Chapman, now a member of the Boston Red Sox, helped the Rangers win the World Series three seasons ago.
As of Tuesday, Chapman's WHIFF rate is a strong 29.8%. He could be exactly what the Rangers need to finish games.
Chapman is also striking out 11.7 batters per nine innings.
Of course, the Red Sox need to decide to sell for this trade to become a reality. They are suddenly just 4.5 games out of a Wild Card spot after their sweep over the New York Yankees.
