The Boston Red Sox are expected to be trade deadline buyers now after their incredible 14-game winning streak that has brought Boston right back into postseason contention.
While they do need to stay competitive to feel confident as major buyers, this team has made up significant ground and should be buyers. If they're buying, shortstop is one of their top needs this summer.
In revealing the trade odds for Houston Astros .798 OPS shortstop Jeremy Pena, ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan gave the Red Sox some bad news on one of the top shortstop trade targets this deadline.
Red Sox get bad news on Jeremy Pena trade odds
"7. Jeremy Pena, SS, Houston Astros Chance of being traded: 35%," Passan and McDaniel write. "... The one potential drawback from Houston's perspective: There aren't a whole lot of contenders in the market for a shortstop, and it might make more sense to wait until the winter."
The Red Sox might be a contender seemingly out of nowhere, and could use someone like Pena, but that doesn't help much considering the other clubs that could have interest in Pena.
Passan and McDaniel named, other than the Red Sox, the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, and Atlanta Braves as best fits for Pena in a trade.

While Pena might have a 35% chance of being traded, Mason Miller, Tarik Skubal, and plenty of others have higher odds of being dealt, according to the ESPN duo.
Pena, the Gold Glove-winning shortstop who is 28 years old and under control through the 2027 season, would be a great trade addition for the Red Sox.
But, with the Astros potentially waiting until the offseason when more teams could have interest in Pena, the Red Sox might not be able to land the .798 OPS infielder this summer amid their July resurgence.
Boston might still have a chance to land Pena, but their odds aren't great, thanks to a weaker market for Pena than for players at other positions. This update doesn't bode well for the Red Sox to land Pena, but it's not impossible just yet.
