Red Sox given better than coin-flip odds to make postseason after 9-game win streak

The Boston Red Sox were trending towards being one of the bigger MLB trade deadline sellers with just one month to go until the deadline.

But, they rattled off an incredible nine-game win streak, which featured sweeps of the New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, and the Los Angeles Angels.

Now, after such an incredible 9-game win streak, the Red Sox are coming out of the All-Star break with, as ESPN's Bradford Doolittle noted, better than coin-flip odds to make the postseason.

Red Sox now have a greater than 50% chance to make postseason

"Record: 46-48 | Projected final record: 82-80. Division title odds: 1.5% | Playoff odds: 51.0% | Championship odds: 1.9%," Doolittle projects.

These odds for the Red Sox make sense, as their chances to win the World Series and win the AL East seem very slim based on their current team.

But, when it comes to making the postseason, following their red-hot stretch into the All-Star break, they now have a 51.0% chance of making the postseason.

Those odds are better than a coin flip, which, if Red Sox fans were told at the start of July that these would be their odds to make the postseason after the All-Star break, they might have a tough time believing that.

But, a nine-game winning streak, combined with a very weak American League Wild Card hunt, has the Red Sox just 0.5 game out of a postseason spot despite being two games under .500.

Sure, this team might not go very far if they make the postseason. But, just making it there after how disastrous things went to begin the year and through June, would be a commendable accomplishment.
