Red Sox have 2 reasons not to trade for Mets' Francisco Lindor

With the trade deadline approaching, the Boston Red Sox will surely be active.

Several weeks ago, the idea of the Red Sox buying at the deadline would have been a crazy one.

It's not so crazy now. Still, Boston should only make moves that make sense not only for this season, but for seasons to come.

That likely means not taking on the long-term contract of an All-Star shortstop from the NL East.

The Athletic's Jim Bowden wrote Tuesday that the Red Sox are not interested in acquiring Francisco Lindor from the New York Mets.

"The Red Sox are not engaged in trying to acquire Lindor. Instead, they have pursued CJ Abrams, Zach Neto and Jeremy Peña," Bowden wrote.

With Trevor Story and Marcelo Mayer on the IL, Boston's middle infield options are not the strongest. The Red Sox will need to make an upgrade for this year, and Abrams, Neto and Peña are the top three shortstops on the rumor mill.

Why Red Sox will stay away from Lindor

Bowden stated two reasons as to why the Red Sox will not attempt to make a trade for Lindor:

"Lindor’s contract and age are too much of an issue for Boston to pursue him at this trade deadline."

Lindor will turn 33 in November and still has five years remaining on his 10-year, $341 million contract with the Mets.

That may turn out to be a huge financial burden for the Red Sox if they change their minds. Lindor's health at an advanced age in professional baseball may decline by 2031.
