The Boston Red Sox could have had a two-time World Series MVP as their starting shortstop last summer.

The keywords there are could have.

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox inquired about a trade for a five-time All-Star from an AL West club last summer.

Obviously, the talks went no further than a few discussions between the two clubs.

"A number of clubs, including the Boston Red Sox, asked the Rangers about Seager last offseason, sources with knowledge of the conversations said," Rosenthal wrote.

"The curiosity of those teams grew after the Rangers traded second baseman Marcus Semien, their other major signing prior to the 2021-22 lockout," Rosenthal added. "The Rangers’ response on Seager was clear: We would need to be overwhelmed."

The Red Sox may have dodged a bullet with Seager.

His resume is very appealing, but he struggles to stay on the field. During the 2026 season, Seager has been on the IL three separate times.

Still, the left-handed hitter may have been an upgrade over Trevor Story, who is also often injured.

Keep in mind that would have been a significant contract for the Red Sox to obtain if the Rangers didn't eat most of Seager's salary.

Seager signed a 10-year, $325 million deal with Texas that runs out after the 2031 season. By that time, he will be 37 years old.
