Rich Paul reveals what teams must prove to land LeBron James this offseason

1 hour ago 2

LeBron James is officially done with the Los Angeles Lakers. His agent, Rich Paul, confirmed to ESPN's Shams Charania that James notified the Purple and Gold that he's playing elsewhere next season, making this his first true unrestricted free agency run since 2018.

The Lakers didn't waste any time moving on. They pulled off a sign-and-trade to get center Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz. To clear up the money to make that happen, they traded Deandre Ayton to the Wizards for Jaden Hardy and a couple of second-round draft picks.

Since the news dropped, everyone online has a hot take about where LeBron will land. But Rich Paul is the only one who actually knows what’s going on. On his Game Over podcast, Paul broke down a 10-team list and explained exactly how they are grading teams.

Paul also explained the film-room work he and his team put in before recommending any destination to the 41-year-old. He and his team spent a whole morning crunching the numbers to see how King James actually fits with different rosters.

"Today I worked on, we talked about defensive ratings, on-ball defense individuals, help defense from individuals," Paul said. "Looking at how offense is run... it goes all the way down to just what has been the history of someone in this position valuing a possession. That's gonna matter."

Rich Paul shares the key factors he’s been studying to help LeBron find his next team:

- Defensive ratings
- On ball/help defense
- Offensive schemes
- Coaches/team success rate on ATOs

Paul also mentioned that he follows an analytics expert on social media who breaks down complex stats into plain English. He used Jaylen Brown as a prime example, pointing out how advanced metrics can reshape a player's narrative when their defensive reputation doesn't match a down year.

So, it is safe to say that they are going through an intense level of preparation, no matter what the four-time NBA champion decides at the end of the day.

With the Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly emerging as the frontrunner amid Bronny James reunion buzz, and the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors also in the mix, Paul's homework is about to be put to the test.
