Greg Schiano has built a program in Piscataway that competes with relentless effort, but effort alone cannot mask a fundamental lack of talent in the trenches.
The 18-team Big Ten is a merciless environment for teams lacking elite depth, and Rutgers is about to find out exactly how punishing that reality can be.
According to the latest 2026 win-loss predictions from CBS Sports analyst Brad Crawford, Rutgers is projected to finish with a dismal 4-8 overall record, winning just one game in Big Ten play.

On paper, the Scarlet Knights have weapons. Crawford acknowledges that offensive playmakers like KJ Duff and running back Antwan Raymond have enough firepower "to generate weekly highlights in 2026."
But highlight reels don't win games in the Big Ten, either.
"The Scarlet Knights are staring at one of the Big Ten's most punishing schedules and remain overmatched in the trenches against elite competition," Crawford wrote.
When the offensive line cannot hold up against elite pass rushers and the defense cannot consistently stop the run, the entire operation collapses. Crawford notes that defensive question marks make it impossible to trust Rutgers against the top half of the conference.

"Greg Schiano's program competes hard, but depth issues push the ceiling down," Crawford concluded.
A 4-8 campaign defined by growing pains and trench mismatches will serve as a massive reality check, proving that Rutgers is still miles away from competing consistently in the new super-conference.
