If you have been anywhere near the internet since December, it’s safe to assume that you are at least a little bit aware of the drama surrounding Blake Lively, her husband, Ryan Reynolds, and her costar and the director of her last movie, It Ends With Us, Justin Baldoni.
Then, on Jan. 16, Justin filed a countersuit against both Blake and Ryan, alleging defamation, civil extortion, breach of contract, and more. He has vehemently denied Blake's sexual harassment claims, and on Feb. 1, Justin’s legal team launched a website that put all of his correspondence with Blake throughout the production and filming of It Ends With Us on public display.
However, on Sunday night, the pair stepped out to join a whole host of big-name celebrities for Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary special in New York City, which saw anyone who’s anyone come together to celebrate 50 years of the hit NBC sketch show.
And during the three-hour special, Ryan even appeared to make light of the drama surrounding him and Blake as he riffed with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey from his spot in the audience while they were on stage.
Obviously, this moment immediately caused a stir on social media, and it didn’t take long for attention to turn from what Ryan said in the clip to Blake’s reaction as she sat beside him. At the start of the skit, Blake is smiling and appears to be in good spirits, however, after Ryan asks: “What have you heard?” her grin immediately drops.
Examining the footage, internet sleuths began to theorize that Blake had no idea Ryan had planned this bit with Tina and Amy, and was caught completely off-guard by his decision to refer to the Justin legal battle.

Sharing a screenshot of her facial expression, one person wrote on a Reddit forum: “blake’s face after he said that is killing me!!!”
Somebody else replied: “Immediately saw it. Looks like she was not in the joke.”
“She suffered whiplash looking up so fast,” one more claimed. Another added: “I noticed her and she looked displeased and concerned.”
Meanwhile, over on X, one viewer wrote: “The funniest part of Ryan Reynolds speaking with Amy Poehler and Tine Fey was Blake Lively looking terrified bc sis did not know what was going to be said.”
But others claimed that Blake’s reaction was part of the skit, with one tweet reading: “people assuming Blake Lively was unaware of the joke, as if her reaction weren’t part of the bit… it’s easier for them to believe a woman is stupid than to admit she’s playing along.”
“she’s an actress. why would her husband do this without her knowing? she’s in on the bit,” somebody else insisted.
Either way, Ryan’s choice to make light of what is objectively a very serious situation during a live telecast left some people scratching their heads, especially given Blake’s allegations of sexual harassment. One person wrote: “Mind you, his wife’s accusing that man of sexual harassment. Giving the gravity of the situation I would think any jokes, even jokes hinting towards it, would at least be completely shut down.”
