Saudi Arabia face Uruguay on Monday as Group H play at the 2026 World Cup begins.

Spain take on Cape Verde in the earlier game before Marcelo Bielsa's team take on a Saudi side they met at this stage of the competition back in 2018.

The European champions are expected to finish top of this pool, but Uruguay will believe they can challenge La Roja and will be eager to lay down an early marker. For Georgios Donis and his players, this game is all about finding a way to get a result that will give them at least some hope of progressing to the Round of 32.

Below is the latest team news and projected lineups for both sides.

Saudi Arabia projected starting 11

(4-3-3, right to left): 21. M. Al Owais (GK) — 2. S. Abdulhamid, 5. H. Al Tambakti, 4. A. Al-Amri, 14. H. Kadesh — 15. A. Al Khaibari, 23. M. Kanno, 7. M. Al Juwayr — 20. S. Mandash, 9. F. Al Buraikan, 10. S. Al Dawsari

  • Injured: Al Aqidi (muscle, doubt)
  • Suspended: None

Saudi Arabia have some concerns over Al Nassr goalkeeper Nawaf Al AqidiMohammed Al Owais will likely deputise should the No. 1 be unable to start.

The danger men in the side are the experienced Salem Al Dawsari and striker Firas Al Buraikan, and if Saudi Arabia are to get anything from this fixture, these two will likely be at the heart of it.

Al Dawsari, Al Owais and Mohammed Kano were all involved in the 1-0 group-stage loss to Uruguay at the 2018 finals in Russia.

Uruguay projected starting 11

(4-3-3, right to left): 23. F. Muslera (GK) — 13. G. Varela, 3. S. Caceres, 16. M. Olivera, 25. J. Sanabria — 8. F. Valverde, 5. M. Ugarte, 6. R. Bentancur — 9. D. Nunez, 21. F. Vinas, 20. M. Araujo

  • Injured: Gimenez (ankle), R. Araujo (calf), De Arrascaeta (calf), Vina (muscle), Caceres (head)
  • Suspended: None

Uruguay have a handful of injury concerns, particularly in defence, meaning Juan Manuel Sanabria could be deployed at the back. The absences of Ronald Araujo and Jose Maria Gimenez will be keenly felt at the heart of the back four if neither is available, although the focus will be on getting them back fit at least for the game with Spain.

Central midfield is Uruguay's main strength. Manuel Ugarte has had a difficult time at Manchester United but is a hugely valuable disruptor at the heart of his national team. Rodrigo Bentancur provides good balance alongside Federico Valverde, who has an argument to be considered the best midfielder in the world.
