Senators shopping 31-point defenseman in latest trade rumor

The Ottawa Senators could be looking at some changes this offseason.

The trade rumors are already swirling, including a new one about the defenseman Jordan Spence.

Spence, according to the Ottawa Citizen's Bruce Garrioch, is being shopped.

“Let’s make this clear,” Garrioch wrote. “This doesn’t mean Steve Staios, the club’s president of hockey operations and general manager, is trying to deal Spence. But that possibility shouldn’t be ruled out because all options are on the table with all 32 teams trying to make changes.”

Clearly, nothing is a given, which Garrioch notes in that segment of his article. But given that Spence has been singled out here, it's clear that he's a player Ottawa wouldn't mind dealing away.

He's still just 25 years old, originally from Australia and a fourth-round pick by the Los Angeles Kings in 2019.

Spence played his first four seasons at the NHL level for the Kings before joining the Senators for this past campaign.

In 2025-26, Spence had seven goals and 24 assists for 31 points in 73 games. He also had 59 blocks and 55 hits.

Spence averaged 18 minutes and 44 seconds of ice time, which was his highest in his career aside from a short rookie season stint in which he played more.

It's probably telling in some way that Spence spent just one season with the Senators before they're looking to trade him, but given his age and his relatively solid production so far in the NHL, it would make sense for some other teams to be interested.

Will they pay enough to actually get Ottawa to go through with a deal? That will be the question worth wondering as Spence is shopped around the league.
