Sophie Cunningham reveals what sparked viral finger-pointing moment with DeWanna Bonner

Sophie Cunningham has finally explained the story behind one of the most talked-about WNBA moments of the 2026 season. The Indiana Fever guard's now-famous finger-pointing exchange with Phoenix Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner quickly became a viral meme after the Fever's June 23 matchup. Fans replayed the moment countless times, but Cunningham has now revealed exactly what led to the unforgettable standoff.

Cunningham explains what happened

Speaking on her "Show Me Something" podcast, Cunningham said the sequence started because she believed both Bonner and Caitlin Clark should have been treated the same by the officials after a heated exchange late in the fourth quarter.

"I walked out there and I was literally talking to the ref," Cunningham said. "I was like, 'Now Caitlin got one, but why didn't she get one?' Because if Caitlin's gonna get one, then she should have got one. It shouldn't have been one or the other."

Clark was assessed a personal foul during the confrontation before receiving a technical foul for clapping following the play. Cunningham walked over while speaking with an official about the decision.

According to Cunningham, that's when Bonner responded.

"And I was just kind of pointing and she's like, 'Don't you point at me!' I was like, 'Oh, shouldn't have said that.' And I didn't say a word."

Instead, Cunningham simply kept pointing.

The gesture lasted for more than 20 seconds and immediately became one of the most replayed moments of the WNBA season. Officials eventually issued double technical fouls to Cunningham and Bonner, while Alyssa Thomas and Myisha Hines-Allen also received technical fouls during the sequence.

Sophie Cunningham knew exactly what she was doing

Looking back, Cunningham admitted the entire situation was a little ridiculous.

"I think it's the stupidest thing I've ever done," Cunningham said.

But she also acknowledged she couldn't resist after seeing Bonner's reaction.

"It was pissing her off, and I couldn't help myself."

The moment quickly escaped the basketball world and became internet material, with countless memes, GIFs and social media edits featuring Cunningham's extended finger-pointing celebration.

The moment continues to live on

Although the Fever and Mercury have moved on from the game, Cunningham's explanation adds another layer to one of the WNBA's most memorable viral moments of the year. What initially looked like a random exchange was actually sparked by Cunningham questioning why Clark received a technical foul while Bonner initially did not. Once Bonner told her not to point, Cunningham decided to keep doing exactly that.

It turned an ordinary in-game disagreement into one of the defining viral images of the 2026 WNBA season, and now fans finally know the story behind the meme.
