The San Antonio Spurs made a significant splash on the free agent market on Wednesday, signing former Philadelphia 76ers star forward Tobias Harris to a one-year, $31 million contract to help give them the valuable veteran leadership they desperately need.
Harris, who competed with the Detroit Pistons last season, averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game on solid shooting splits on a much-improved Cade Cunningham-led Eastern Conference squad.
Disappointingly, though, the Spurs' decision to add Harris essentially eliminates them from the LeBron James sweepstakes this summer.
“The Spurs’ deal with Tobias Harris slams the point home, but league sources say San Antonio is not expected to pursue LeBron James,” The Stein Line’s Marc Stein reported on X/Twitter. “Bennett Durando reported that Denver, by contrast, IS joining Golden State (Warriors), Cleveland (Cavaliers), and Miami (Heat) in this chase.”
The Spurs were viewed as an underrated landing spot for James entering the offseason. Once James announced he was leaving the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, rumors surrounding the 41-year-old four-time NBA champion and the Spurs began to escalate.
A James-Victor Wembanyama pairing would have been must-see TV, as both contributors possess the star power, charisma, and versatile offensive skill set needed to flourish in the big leagues.
San Antonio ultimately couldn’t resist the urge to sign Tobias to a short-term deal, though, making it far more realistic to witness James join one of the other suitors at his disposal.
