Streaming TV’s Best New Show Has A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Like crime shows? Like crime shows with serial killers? Like crime shows with serial killers with perfect review scores? Well, there’s a new one out that has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and stars a fantastic actress to boot.

The show is Furious, which is now airing on Hulu and Disney Plus and has a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score from over a dozen critics. It has an interesting concept, one rarely seen in the genre.

Emmy Rossum plays an FBI Agent who goes undercover to try to find a female serial killer who only marries lonely millionaires. You might guess why that would be the case. We rarely see stories focused on female serial killers, which makes sense, because those rarely exist in real life. Roughly 12-17% of serial killers are women, and some have become more famous through media, such as Charlize Theron playing Aileen Wuornos in Monster. Theron won Best Actress at the Oscars for that role in 2004.

Turning back to Furious, you may know Emmy Rossum best from her 110-episode run on Shameless on Showtime which ended in 2019. That obviously took up quite a bit of time, but most recently she was in The Crowded Room, a TV miniseries, which also starred Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland. It…wasn’t very good, attracting a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, a rare miss for Apple TV. I’m sure Rossum is thrilled to see Furious so much better received. The show also stars Scoot McNairy, Jake Lacy and Lola Petticrew.

Furious began with a double episode premiere today, and will air weekly after that on Hulu and Disney Plus, since those are essentially the same service now. The show is inspired not by real life events, but by the 1987 movie Black Widow. No, not the Marvel character. That starred Debra Winger and Theresa Russell, but I can’t say I’ve heard of them. Dennis Hopper and a pre-LOST Terry O’Quinn were in the film as well.

There are a few other shows that have arrived with 100% scores as of late, though many have fewer reviews in than this one, making the figure more significant. Here’s what some critics are saying about Furious:

• The Hollywood Reporter: “It’s a tough watch, but a gratifying corrective to the Criminal Minds and Law & Orders of the world.”
• New York Magazine: “Victimized girls and women who sound like feathers deserve more weight than they’ve been given, and Furious, by tapping into the anger we should all be feeling, strives to give it to them.”

So, absolutely worth a watch, it seems, and I will have thoughts on the show after I watch later today.
