Three Takeaways from the 76ers' Summer League

On Saturday evening, the Philadelphia 76ers wrapped up their 2026 NBA Summer League campaign with a 94-96 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, bringing an end to an early look at their recent first-round draft pick, Labaron Philon Jr, among other prospects. Here are some takeaways from their Summer Slate:

Johni Broome is looking healthy and improved

When the Sixers selected Broome in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft, it looked as if they were taking a low-risk, high-reward option to back up Joel Embiid in the backcourt, but the first impressions weren't great. The former Auburn Tiger would struggle to find his spot in the limited minutes that he was given at the NBA level, so he was assigned to the G League to help grow his game.

Broome would excel with the Delaware Blue Coats, but his season ended early in late February after he suffered a tear in his right meniscus.

So this Summer League would give Sixers' fans a first look into what Broome has been working on during his journey back to the court, and it's showing that he's taken his game to another level. Across his three appearances, the 23-year-old put up an average of 14.6 points and nine rebounds per game.

These numbers might not sound all too impressive, but both metrics are solid improvements from where he was during the 2025 NBA Summer League, averaging 11.5 and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Now it's no secret that the skill level at the Summer League and the skill level in the NBA are two separate things, so the Philadelphia faithful will have to wait and see how it holds up when the regular season rolls around.

Labaron Philon Jr has the makings of a great scorer

Philon caught the eyes of Sixers fans when the team drafted him earlier on in the Summer due to his raw scoring ability during his time at the University of Alabama, averaging 21.9 points per night during his sophomore season, draining 50.1 percent of his shots from the field, and 39.9 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc.

The 20-year-old would put on several offensive displays over the course of his four appearances in Las Vegas, with his 24-point outing against the Indiana Pacers being his highlight of the Summer League, shooting on an impressive 40.9 percent accuracy, while dishing out six assists in his 34 minutes on the court.

If there was one aspect of his game that Philon might have to work on in the build-up to the Sixers' training camp, it could be his three-point shooting, as he shot with 25.8 percent accuracy across his four appearances, which is a clear drop from where he was during his final year with Alabama.

Dante Maddox Jr proves his doubters wrong

When Dante Maddox Jr entered the 2025 NBA Draft, it was coming off of a rather shaky season with Xavier, one in which he'd average 7.3 points a night, so it wasn't too much of a shocker to see that his name wouldn't be called on either the first or second night of the draft. But this wouldn't stop the 24-year-old from looking to improve on his game, as he signed with BNXT side Okapi Aalstar, and would ignite on the court.

During his 40 games with Okapi Aalstar, Maddox would average 24.3 points, shooting on a lethal 52.2 field goal percentage. These performances would catch the eyes of the 76ers, who would bring on the former Xavier star for their trip to the 2026 NBA Summer League, and he'd make it count.

Across the five outings for the 24-year-old, he would be Philadelphia's second-leading scorer, only behind the aforementioned Philon, putting up 15.6 points per night, doing so on a shaky 39 percent shooting from the field, but nevertheless, he was a solid scoring option for the Sixers.

It'll be interesting to see where Maddox goes from here, after his first NBA Summer League experience, with a potential debut in the G League always remaining on the cards
