Tom Holland Confirmed The “Humbling” Rumor About Soccer Star Erling Haaland Leaving Him On Read — And Erling's Brutally Honest Explanation Is Everything

No one is immune to the embarrassment of rejection, not even the most famous people in Hollywood — just ask Tom Holland.

Appearing on The Tonight Show on Monday, Tom was asked about an awkward rumor involving him and the World Cup's hottest breakout star, Erling Haaland of Norway.

Erling's brilliance (both as a soccer player and a social media sensation) might be new to you, but anyone who loves the sport will have been following his career for years, particularly since he made his Premier League debut with Manchester City in 2022.

Tom is a huge soccer fan, so when he previously crossed paths with Erling at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco, he eagerly tried to organize a hangout with the star striker.

"I was at Monaco, I was watching Lewis [Hamilton] race, and I saw [Erling]. He was in a hospitality suite across from me, and I just thought I'd shoot my shot and send him a text," Tom said, confirming the viral rumor.

Tom said he invited Erling out to dinner, but wound up getting left on read. "Not even a response," Tom recalled. "Not an excuse, not 'I’m busy tonight, I’m playing football.' Nada." Ouch.

Although this incident presumably took place a few years ago (Tom went to the Monaco GP in 2021 and 2023), the DM story came to light recently after Erling said on the Norwegian interview show A Laget that he actually had no idea who Tom was, and thought the message was from a random, "unknown person."

"This is a bit embarrassing, to be completely honest. We were in Monaco at the Formula 1, and then I got a message," Erling explained in his native language. "I don’t watch movies much, so I have no idea who people are. There was one asking if we could go out for dinner, but I’d never seen him, so I didn’t bother to answer."

In that interview, Erling laughed off the mishap and said he ought to get in contact with the actor now that he actually knows who he is. And it sounds like a friendship is still on the cards, as Tom fortunately doesn't seem to be too offended by the situation.

"I tell you what, that is the exact type of humbling experience that is important for actors," he joked with Jimmy, suggesting that it could be awkward for them to meet up after England knocked Norway out of the World Cup last week.

"Erling will definitely have dinner with Holland now," added another user, while someone else suggested that the soon-to-be-26-year-old — being as active on social media as he is — will no doubt respond to Tom's comments at some point, probably with a funny Snapchat story.

Well, with Norway's World Cup journey over, maybe Erling will use his free time to catch up on some Spider-Man movies? Or maybe he'll even squeeze in a trip to the movie theater to see The Odyssey? Whatever the case, I need to see these two hanging out ASAP.
