No one is immune to the embarrassment of rejection, not even the most famous people in Hollywood — just ask Tom Holland.
Appearing on The Tonight Show on Monday, Tom was asked about an awkward rumor involving him and the World Cup's hottest breakout star, Erling Haaland of Norway.
Erling's brilliance (both as a soccer player and a social media sensation) might be new to you, but anyone who loves the sport will have been following his career for years, particularly since he made his Premier League debut with Manchester City in 2022.
Tom is a huge soccer fan, so when he previously crossed paths with Erling at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco, he eagerly tried to organize a hangout with the star striker.
"I was at Monaco, I was watching Lewis [Hamilton] race, and I saw [Erling]. He was in a hospitality suite across from me, and I just thought I'd shoot my shot and send him a text," Tom said, confirming the viral rumor.
Tom said he invited Erling out to dinner, but wound up getting left on read. "Not even a response," Tom recalled. "Not an excuse, not 'I’m busy tonight, I’m playing football.' Nada." Ouch.
Although this incident presumably took place a few years ago (Tom went to the Monaco GP in 2021 and 2023), the DM story came to light recently after Erling said on the Norwegian interview show A Laget that he actually had no idea who Tom was, and thought the message was from a random, "unknown person."
"This is a bit embarrassing, to be completely honest. We were in Monaco at the Formula 1, and then I got a message," Erling explained in his native language. "I don’t watch movies much, so I have no idea who people are. There was one asking if we could go out for dinner, but I’d never seen him, so I didn’t bother to answer."
