Young Tottenham mascots provided a moment of comic relief ahead of Spurs’ Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The amusing incident unfolded in the tunnel at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where the mascots enthusiastically greeted Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

As the Dutch defender walked past, the animated youngsters called out his name, clearly starstruck. But what followed left both fans and commentators laughing.

One of the mascots shouted, “Come to Tottenham, we haven’t got any good defenders at the moment.” The cheeky remark sparked laughter among Sky Sports commentators, who praised Spurs’ mascots for their entertainment value.

Van Dijk reflects on semi-final defeat to Tottenham

While the mascots lightened the mood, the match itself was a tense affair. Tottenham secured a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a late goal from Lucas Bergvall.

The teenager’s winner came amid controversy, as Liverpool felt he should have received a second yellow card moments earlier.

The loss ended Liverpool’s impressive 24-game unbeaten run and handed Spurs an advantage heading into the second leg.

However, van Dijk remained optimistic. Speaking after the match, the defender described the result as “half-time” in the tie.

“I think we created good moments and opportunities, but not clear-cut chances,” van Dijk said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t score. It’s half-time now, and I’m looking forward to the game back at Anfield.”

He acknowledged Liverpool’s performance wasn’t at its best but remained confident the team could turn things around in the second leg. “We take it on the chin. We have another 90-plus minutes to go, and I am really looking forward to that.”
