Welcome to golf major No. 3 of 2026.

All eyes fall upon Southampton, New York, this weekend, where the 126th edition of the U.S. Open will be returning to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler comes in as arguably the most notable storyline — with a win, he can join the exclusive list of golfers to complete a career grand slam, most recently joined by Rory McIlroy.

However, with McIlroy already winning a major in 2026, Brooks Koepka winning the last U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and Aaron Rai coming off his PGA Championship victory, there are plenty of contenders to monitor as the action heads into the weekend.

The Sporting News is tracking live updates, highlights and more from the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Follow along with all the action below.

Round 2

This section will be updated as play begins Friday morning.

Round 1

11:00 p.m. — Thursday's first round technically is not yet over. First-round play was suspended by darkness, meaning it will wrap up bright-and-early on Friday.

However, even with the early close to Thursday, Wyndham Clark has emerged as the clear favorite so far. The 2023 U.S. Open winner is at six-under through 16 holes, and while he'll have to wrap up his first round strong still, he's four strokes ahead of eight others — including amateur Ryder Cowan — in second place.

The big names are still in the mix too, with Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau not too far back.

The first round of the U.S. Open suspended due to darkness at 8:25 p.m. Players yet to complete the round will be back in position at 6:35 a.m. Friday, with all second-round tee times moved back 15 minutes.

10:50 p.m. — One of the more viral moments from Round 1 action came courtesy of a Rory McIlroy shot. It appeared that a fan went to go pick the ball up initially, but the ball wasn't lifted before other fans stopped them.

A fan appeared to pick up Rory McIlroy's ball after his second shot on the 4th hole — but she stopped just short of touching it. The USGA reviewed video and interviewed fans to confirm.

Statement from the USGA:
"Right after McIlroy’s second shot on the 4th hole came to rest, it…
