Walker Kessler’s first message to Lakers fans will have everyone fired up

Walker Kessler understands exactly what the Los Angeles Lakers gave up to acquire him, and the 24-year-old center is determined to prove the franchise made the right decision.

Kessler was officially introduced after signing a four-year, $130 million contract earlier this month as part of a sign-and-trade agreement with the Utah Jazz. To land one of the NBA’s most sought-after restricted free agents, the Lakers sent two unprotected first-round draft picks and two first-round pick swaps to Utah, underscoring how highly they value the 7-foot-2 center.

Kessler’s  comments as a Laker have fans dreaming of a championship

“It makes you feel a certain way when you know an organization believes in you,” Kessler said. “With what the Lakers have invested, they’re showing that belief, in a monetary value. Not just with money, but in draft assets. If I know they have that belief in me, I’m going to run through a brick wall for them. That’s how I’ve been wired my whole life.”

Kessler admitted navigating restricted free agency wasn’t easy but said landing in Los Angeles felt like the right outcome after spending four seasons with the Jazz.

The Lakers prioritized upgrading their frontcourt this offseason, believing Kessler’s elite rim protection, rebounding and screen-setting ability make him an ideal fit alongside superstar Luka Dončić. Kessler is already excited about the partnership.

“Doncic has such a big presence on the court,” Kessler said. “It makes it a lot easier for all four guys around him to do what they need to do. I can play defense for him, set great screens and get him some assists. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Despite being limited to just five appearances last season after undergoing left shoulder surgery in November, Kessler remained one of the league’s premier young centers. He averaged 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game while continuing to establish himself as one of the NBA’s top interior defenders.

Kessler revealed the shoulder issue first surfaced during his college career before worsening last season. Now healthy, he enters Los Angeles expected to anchor the paint and help the Lakers strengthen a defense built to contend for an NBA championship.
