2026 NBA free agency is right around the corner, as the negotiating period where teams can begin speaking and working out contracts with free agents will begin on Tuesday.
One free agent who would command a lot of interest on the open market is center Kristaps Porzingis. The 30-year-old was traded to the Golden State Warriors during the trade deadline this past season and showed some promising signs. However, Porzingis played just 15 games for Golden State and 32 total on the year due to injuries and an illness.
Though Porzingis has constantly struggled with injuries throughout his career, he is a valuable player when on the court due to his tremendous rim protection and ability to stretch the floor as a 7-foot-2 center. As a result, the Warriors are in active talks to bring back the veteran ahead of free agency, but if Golden State can't strike a deal with him, Porzingis could have a competitive market.
76ers and Pacers also linked to Porzingis amid Warriors negotiations
Along with the Warriors, Bleacher Report's Scott Polacek lists the Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers as possible landing spots for Porzingis in free agency.
"When healthy, Porziņģis is someone who could still be a primary contributor at this stage of his career," Polacek wrote.
Philadelphia could use some help in the frontcourt alongside Joel Embiid, and Porzingis would be the perfect player to pair with the former MVP. Porzingis' floor spacing would open up lanes for Embiid, and the duo would be one of the best defensive tandems in basketball as well.
Indiana is currently slated to have Ivica Zubac start at center, but the 29-year-old is better suited to come off the bench. Signing Porzingis to pair with Pascal Siakam would give the Pacers a versatile frontcourt duo with a ton of offensive firepower and a championship pedigree.
The 76ers and Pacers are both over-the-cap teams, meaning they will have to use their mid-level exception if they want to bring in Porzingis. This makes it far more likely that the Warriors are able to retain Porzingis, though the franchise reportedly wants the former All-Star to take a pay cut from the $30.7 million cap hit he carried last season.
We'll see what transpires with Porzingis in the coming days. The most likely outcome is that he re-signs with Golden State on a short-term deal, but if he hits the market, anything can happen.
