Warriors, Cavaliers reportedly front-runners to land LeBron James ahead of looming decision

The entire NBA world is watching one person this summer: future Hall of Famer LeBron James as he decides his next destination. At 41 years old, James remains the biggest name available in free agency.

For the first time in eight seasons, the Los Angeles Lakers will move forward without James in their organization. James informed the Lakers that he would not be returning.

“For the first time since 2018, LeBron James is available in free agency. James informed the Los Angeles Lakers last month that he intends to play his 24th NBA season elsewhere, ending his eight-year run with the franchise. The 41-year-old is now an unrestricted free agent, coming off a season in which he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds on 51.5% shooting. In other words: James can still help a team, which is exactly what he intends to do,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Bobby Marks wrote.

It has been two weeks since free agency began, and James is now entering the final stages of deciding where he will play next season.

“It’s decision time for LeBron James… The Leading suitors have been CLE, MIA, GSW, PHI, and MIN…. LeBron James has made it clear privately that he wants to go somewhere he can compete for a championship. Somewhere he feels he finds that happiness from a team environment and culture that he can uplift,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said.

James’ offseason has remained relatively quiet, but there is growing belief that the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers are the favorites to land the four-time NBA champion.

“I would be stunned if he picked a team that wasn’t Golden State or Cleveland,” a Western Conference executive told FOS’ Alex Schiffer.

There is no doubt the Warriors have made a strong push for James throughout this process, as he has met with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. The Cavaliers also have the advantage of being James’ hometown team, which remains an appealing factor.

Ultimately, James’ decision will come down to which team gives him the best opportunity to compete for an NBA championship. A decision is nearing, but the Cavaliers and Warriors appear to be the teams to beat.
