The Golden State Warriors will move forward without a notable backcourt contributor.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Warriors’ 6-foot-2 fan-favorite guard is leaving Golden State for a two-way contract with the Phoenix Suns.
“Free agent guard Pat Spencer has agreed to a two-way NBA contract with the Phoenix Suns,” Charania reported on X/Twitter Thursday. “Spencer's role grew across three seasons in Golden State, where he averaged 7.2 points and 18.6 minutes last season.”
“Suns officials finalized the deal on Thursday night with Mark Bartelstein and Ross Aroyo of PrioritySports, as Spencer departs the Warriors.”
Spencer, who isn’t too far removed from starring as a lacrosse player at Loyola (Maryland), didn’t receive his big NBA break until the 2025-26 season. The 29-year-old was a legitimate role player on the title-seeking Dubs, playing a confident brand of basketball despite his limitations on both ends and stepping up to the challenge when tasked with filling in for the franchise’s injury-riddled star, Stephen Curry.
Spencer secured a standard NBA contract with Golden State in early February, a significant reward for his valuable efforts on the hardwood. Considering that the Davidsonville, Maryland native is finally starting to turn the corner after a slow start to his career, it’s reasonable to assume he’ll enjoy a successful stint with the Suns.
