The Golden State Warriors didn’t waste much time bolstering their frontcourt after failing to match the Memphis Grizzlies’ three-year, $30 million contract offer sheet for Quentin Post.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Stephen Curry-led Warriors signed a 6-foot-10 former Philadelphia 76ers center and G-League star on Thursday.
“The Golden State Warriors and center Charles Bassey have agreed on a one-year deal, bringing the big man back to the Bay Area for his sixth NBA season,” Charania reported on X/Twitter. “Bassey returns to Golden State in wake of Quinten Post joining the Grizzlies on an offer sheet.”
Bassey, who contributed 20.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game with the Delaware Blue Coats (Philadelphia’s G-League affiliate) and Santa Cruz Warriors (Golden State’s G-League affiliate) last season, earned an end-of-season contract with the Dubs in April and undoubtedly played the best basketball of his career.
The Western Kentucky product averaged 10.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game with Golden State in five contests, shooting 67.7% from the field. Of course, the sample size is small, but it’s clear that Bassey, a high motor back-to-the-basket big man who scores well around the rim and has exhibited potential as a rim protector, is headed in the right direction.
The former second-round pick’s new contract with the Warriors will give him another golden opportunity to impress the seven-time NBA champions.
