There's been a lot of talk about the Dallas Mavericks moving on from Klay Thompson, though those same reports indicate that Dallas has no interest in buying him out. That means that, as of right now, for a move to happen, the Mavericks would need a trade to go through.
At this stage of Thompson's career, it's tough to envision a scenario in which a team is willing to give up too much and take on his contract.
There's a much better chance that he could be bought out and end up on a contending team. I'd be shocked to ever see him land with the Golden State Warriors once again, as it seems like that relationship has sailed a good bit.
However, one writer doesn't think that's the case, recently suggesting that he could end up back with the Warriors if he were to be moved.
“Thompson returning to the Golden State Warriors would be absolutely amazing, especially if LeBron James went there as well. The starting five would be filled with legendary players whom fans would rush to their TV screens to watch each night. The fit is obviously great, with the chemistry between him, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green rivaling any other trio to ever play,” Charles North wrote.
If the Warriors were to somehow land a guy like LeBron James and Thompson got bought out, I could see a scenario where that would make a lot of sense. However, I don't really love the idea of just bringing in Thompson and not doing much else this offseason.
The Warriors have had probably the worst offseason of any team in the NBA that's trying to win, and as much as I like Thompson as a player and what he's done throughout his career, adding an older player like him who isn't what he once was doesn't necessarily solve any of what we've seen not happen this offseason.
