The World Cup final is being played in New Jersey, but FIFA is going global with its halftime show.

The extended halftime show will include performances by headliners Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira and BTS, with each act hailing from a different country.

All eyes will be on Spain and Argentina for the remaining 90 minutes -- and potentially more -- but the show could introduce a new audience to BTS after their popularity surged from South Korea to North America.

Here's what you need to know about BTS' name and what it stands for.

What does BTS stand for?

BTS comes from the Korean phrase Bangtan Sonyeondan, which translates to "Bulletproof Boy Scouts." However, BTS said in 2017 that it would also extend its branding so BTS could mean "Beyond the Scene" as the band started to gain popularity outside of the Korean market.

One member, RM, told Time Magazine around the time the band adopted its new identity that touring in the United States changed the equation.

"We tour all over the world, but the shows in the U.S. really opened our eyes to so many new things in the States," RM said. "And when we won the Billboard Music Award, we were so honored and got to meet so many artists that we love and admire that we can’t wait to return to the States."

BTS also announced a new logo with this video in 2017:

The new identity, while not intended to erase the original, was part of BTS' attempt to better market itself abroad.

BTS name origin

Bangtan Sonyeondan, or Bulletproof Boy Scouts, was a very intentional choice, band member J-Hope explained in a radio appearance.

"It has a profound meaning," he said. "'Bangtan' means to be resistant to bullets, so it means to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim at adolescents like bullets, to preserve the values and ideals of today’s adolescents."

BTS' members aren't adolescents anymore, which might have been part of the calculus behind their 2017 rebrand, but the original name still stands as their official identity.
