What happened to Marcus Semien? Why Mets infielder is headed to IL

1 day ago 6

The New York Mets have been having a nightmare 2026 season, and the injury bug is a huge reason why things have been so bleak this year.

While Juan Soto is trying to stay off the injured list with an issue of his own, the Mets have lost another key player this season due to injury.

According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets are placing Marcus Semien on the 10-day injured list, as the offseason trade pickup for Brandon Nimmo is going to miss a bit of time with a left hip flexor strain.

Why Mets are placing Marcus Semien on 10-day IL

"The Mets placed second baseman Marcus Semien on the 10-day injured list with a left hip flexor strain," Sammon reports. "Ronny Mauricio is up with the team."

This is a brutal hit for the Mets, as they're losing another key player this season during a year they've seen many key position players hit the IL.

Soto and Lindor both have been on the IL this season, and now Semien joins fellow offseason additions Luis Robert Jr. and Jorge Polanco on the injured list.

Semien was hitting .214 with nine homers and 29 RBIs this season before this injury, and over his last five games, he's gone 1-for-19 with one walk and one run scored.

His .612 OPS is a bad mark, but there are plenty of players, including Brett Baty, Polanco, and Mauricio, who've posted worse OPS marks this season.

The Mets are now down another key veteran this season, and another big offseason pickup as well. Only Bo Bichette of the team's four big-name offseason position player additions is still healthy, as this year has been a nightmare for the Mets.
