Pope Francis’ funeral will be held in St. Peter’s Square, in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Ahead of the ceremony, photos released by the Vatican showed the Pope lying in state at his residence, Casa Santa Marta. His body was then moved to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, where it will remain until the funeral this weekend.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals, will lead Saturday’s funeral Mass. Following the service, a nine-day mourning period will take place. After that, Pope Francis’ body will be taken to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for entombment, rather than the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica, where many of his predecessors are laid to rest.

Getty ImagesPope Francis, who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88. According to the Vatican, his death was caused by a stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure. The Pope had been dealing with serious health issues and was hospitalized for 38 days in February and March with bilateral pneumonia and bronchitis.
“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell said in a statement shared by the Vatican on Monday. “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and the marginalized.”
Less than 24 hours before his death, the Pontiff made his final public appearance on Easter Sunday, greeting crowds in St. Peter’s Square and riding through in his popemobile. Vice President JD Vance also visited the Pope on Sunday, making him one of the last officials to meet with Francis.
