White Sox have one big problem amid a dire need to trade for rotation help

The Chicago White Sox are approaching the August 3 MLB trade deadline as buyers this season, as they have a 1.5 game lead on the AL Central with a 54-49 record on the season.

As buyers, the White Sox have a few different needs to address. The most pressing one, and the one that USA Today's Bob Nightengale revealed they "badly" want to address, is the starting rotation.

But Nightengale also revealed that there is one huge problem for the White Sox in trade talks this summer in search of rotation help: the White Sox don't want to give up a top-10 prospect.

"The Chicago White Sox badly want starting pitching, but are telling teams that they will not trade any of their top 10 prospects," Nightengale reports. "They would be willing to add onto their payroll, however, and assume the entirety of a layer's contract."

The White Sox might have a dire need in the starting rotation and have their sights set on a few different pitchers this summer. But, they don't want to move on from any of their top-10 prospects in the process.

Going by MLB Pipeline's top-10 prospects for the White Sox, that means Caleb Bonemer, Hagen Smith, Billy Carlson, Tanner McDougal, Jaden Fauske, William Bergolla Jr., David Sandlin, Mason Adams, Javier Mogollon, and Kyle Lodise are all off the board.

Prospects like George Wolkow, Blake Larson, Rikuu Nishida, and any other player outside of the top-10 prospects for the White Sox could be on the move.

But, by limiting the potential pool of prospects they can use in trade talks to those outside the top-10, the White Sox might find it difficult to land some of the top names this summer.

Reid Detmers, Jose Soriano, and other controllable starters with high upside are going to be hard to acquire if they don't use their better prospects.

This is a significant problem for the White Sox if they stand by it, as they could end up missing out on a few valuable starters if they are steadfast in their unwillingness to include a top-10 prospect in a trade.

Some pitchers could still make sense, especially if they're willing to eat a lot of their contract. Kevin Gausman, Robbie Ray, Clay Holmes, Sandy Alcantara, Brady Singer, Kyle Freeland, and Michael King are all possible targets this summer.

Some of those pitchers will be tricky to acquire without a top-10 prospect, but the White Sox seemingly are going to try, as they could attempt to get the best of both worlds by bolstering their contention status in 2026 while keeping their top prospects for the future.
