White Sox top trade deadline need is position with big question mark

The Chicago White Sox are looking to be trade deadline buyers this season after making up significant ground and becoming a legitimate AL Central contender.

While the division might not be strong, the White Sox becoming a serious contender is still a very real storyline. This team is good enough to buy at the deadline. Though they might prefer long-term trade targets, this team's spending makes a lot of sense.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand revealed what this team's top trade deadline need is, and it's the starting rotation due to one big question mark: How will the current rotation hold up considering a potential inning limit?

White Sox's top trade deadline need is more SP amid innings question

"Chicago's improbable season has made the White Sox into unlikely buyers, and the rotation figures to be an area for GM Chris Getz to upgrade," Feinsand writes.

The White Sox have seen David Martin break out this season with a 3.00 ERA, while Sean Burke has a 3.69 ERA. But, outside of those two, there is some question about the rotation.

Anthony Kay has a 4.50 ERA, Erick Fedde has a 4.34 ERA, and Noah Schultz has a 5.83 ERA in his eight starts this season before landing on the injured list.

Simply looking at the rotation, it clearly needs some help. But, with Feinsand's note of the White Sox limiting the innings of the key starters, things might get a bit trickier.

"Even with fewer innings thrown (352 2/3) than any other rotation in the AL, some of the Sox starters - Davis Martin and Sean Burke, in particular - will have their workloads monitored carefully given their lack of innings during their career," Feinsand writes.

If the White Sox are monitoring the innings count for some of their starting rotation, then the need for more help in the rotation is all the more important.

Martin and Burke might not be starters the team can rely on going forward in a large capacity, and with the other rotation options not being the best, it's clear this team needs another starter or two this summer.

Ideally, a controllable option, someone like Reid Detmers instead of a rental like Robbie Ray or Freddy Peralta, would be the best option for Chicago this summer.

Whomever the White Sox target, it's exciting that they're actually going to be deadline buyers this season, instead of sellers like they have been for years now.
