Who is Australia’s goalie? Why Patrick Beach is starting over Matty Ryan for Socceroos

It wasn't a call that anyone saw coming.

But Patrick Beach didn't disappoint in Australia's World Cup opener against Turkiye, making eight saves in a 2-0 win.

Mathew Ryan had been the long-time starter and seemed to be the choice again. He's still Australia's nominal captain.

Instead, the Socceroos went with Beach, and they can't take him out of net now.

Who is Australia's goalie?

The 22-year old Patrick Beach was making just his third appearance at senior level for Australia in that match against Turkiye.

He remains a domestic player in Australia's A League with Melbourne City.

Before that, he played in the same competition with the Central Coast Mariners.

Beach's breakthrough after joining Melbourne City came in 2024-25, when he played so often over Jamie Young that Young opted to retire.

He remained the regular starter there in 2025-26 and also got to compete in the AFC Champions League, which helped prepare him for the World Cup stage.

Why isn't Mathew Ryan starting for Australia?

The 34-year old Ryan seems mostly to have been benched to hand the goalie gloves to the next generation.

Ryan has 104 caps for Australia, and he just played a full season for Levante in Spain, so he's not out of rhythm.

Beach evidently is the future of Australia in goal, and apparently the future is now.
