The San Francisco 49ers have a bit of a problem on their hands, and Brandon Aiyuk, their once-star wide receiver, is demanding his release through multiple posts on social media.
From calling out the 49ers, flexing his money, and expressing his desire to go play for the Washington Commanders with his college quarterback Jayden Daniels, this Aiyuk saga continues to drag on and on.
But why is Aiyuk going onto social media and making all of these posts? NFL insider Ian Rapoport joined The Pat McAfee Show and revealed why the 49ers WR is taking to social media lately, and it's a very simple reason: to get cut.
Brandon Aiyuk is using social media posts to force 49ers to cut him
"But what I think is that the idea is you create enough noise, enough negative publicity, become so toxic, so that the 49ers will go, 'Okay, I can't deal with this anymore. I'm tired of the headlines of former 49ers receiver, I'm just going to cut him.' They seem to not want to."
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) June 25, 2026The 49ers don't want to cut Aiyuk, and instead have been holding out hope for a trade for the former star wide receiver.
Since the 49ers are slow-playing Aiyuk's likely release, the veteran receiver is making multiple posts on social media to try to get the ball rolling on a roster move.
If the 49ers are tired of hearing about Aiyuk's latest social media post, they can simply release him, as has been the expectation for the entire offseason.

Of course, they won't get anything in exchange for him, which would make his departure from the team sting a good bit more than normal.
They can wait a while to try and get a deal done, but with Aiyuk using social media posts flaunting his money, expressing his desire to play for the Commanders, and taking shots on the 49ers in the process, it's clear he's trying to force a release to happen.
Only time will tell if this strategy for Aiyuk works, as if it doesn't, he's going to have to wait quite a while before the 49ers finally throw in the towel on trying to get a trade return for the disgruntled WR.
