Why did Morgan Rogers choose Chelsea over Arsenal? How Xabi Alonso phone call helped broker record transfer

Chelsea completed a considerable transfer coup by signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a £117m transfer fee on Tuesday. 

Rogers was one of the outstanding players in the Premier League last season, scoring 10 goals and supplying six assists from an attacking midfield role. 

The 23-year-old, who went on to represent England at the 2026 World Cup, was also integral to Villa's Europa League triumph, scoring his third goal of the competition in the 3-0 final victory against Freiburg.

That success would have punched Villa's Champions League ticket, had they not secured a second top-four finish in the past three seasons in any case. It's a tale of success in stark contrast to Chelsea's shambolic 2025/26, where they dismissed head coaches Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, lost the FA Cup final and finished 10th in the Premier League.

This must be set against Chelsea's broader record of success in the 21st century, but it nevertheless makes Rogers' move feel a little jarring. Especially as Premier League champions Arsenal were widely reported to be in the hunt for his signature

Why did Morgan Rogers choose Chelsea over Arsenal?

According to a report by The Athletic, Chelsea wrapped up their deal for Rogers in the space of approximately 48 hours following England's World Cup semifinal defeat to Argentina on Wednesday, July 15. Rogers started that match on the right wing – highlighting the versatility that helped to make him such a prized transfer commodity – and supplied the assist for Anthony Gordon's opening goal. The signing was made official on Tuesday. 

Rogers was understood to have been impressed by how much Chelsea wanted him, feeling he was clearly their No. 1 target. 

Chelsea captain Reece James was in the England camp and Rogers sounded him out about the West London club. Cole Palmer, a friend of Rogers' from their time together in Manchester City's academy, also reached out.

The City academy link continues a pattern for Chelsea's recruitment since Joe Shields joined their football operation. Shields worked in several roles at City across nine years, mostly related to youth development and recruitment. Palmer, Tosin Adarabioyo, Jamie Gittens, Romeo Lavia and Liam Delap all played for City's age group teams.

How Xabi Alonso phone call helped convince Morgan Rogers

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso might well have been the deal-breaker. According to The Athletic, Alonso phoned Rogers on Friday, July 17 and personal terms were arranged on the same day. Rogers came away from the conversation convinced that Alonso was "the real deal".

It was implied to Rogers that he would be used in a range of positions, with Alonso impressed by his capacity to play across the attacking midfield roles and as a false nine. He also spoke to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and garnered the impression that he would be used predominantly as a left winger at Emirates Stadium.

While this would not have been a problem for Rogers, the appeal of working with a coach who helped to take Florian Wirtz's game to the next level at Bayer Leverkusen is easy to imagine. If Alonso reverted to the 3-4-2-1 with which he won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double, Rogers and Palmer could operate as the inside-left and inside-right forwards behind Joao Pedro. 

There is also dazzling Brazilian youngster Estevao to put into the mix, once the winger recovers from the hamstring injury that ruled him out of the World Cup.

What did Chelsea pay for Morgan Rogers?

Chelsea agreed to pay £117million for Rogers, making him the most expensive British player in history.

Elliot Anderson briefly held this distinction after joining Manchester City from Nottingham Forest for £116m during the World Cup, and that deal has served as an obvious benchmark for Villa.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal were invited to match Chelsea's bid but did not wish to go over their internal valuation of Rogers, which was in the region of £80m.

Chelsea transfer spending in Todd Boehly era

Chelsea have spent lavishly during the Todd Boehly era. Rogers is their third signing for in excess of £100m, following the 2023 arrivals of midfielders Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

The July 2026 arrival of Italy full-back Marco Palestra from Atlanta took the Blues' spending in the Clearlake Capital era beyond £1.5billion ($2bn).

However, there is also plenty of transfer activity heading in the other direction. Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos and Tyrique George have already attracted significant fees this summer, with others expected to follow.

Who are Arsenal's transfer targets this window?

Although Arsenal were touted as Rogers' most likely destination, Mikel Arteta's side have also been credited with interest in several big-name forwards, including Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez and Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola. Expect their attention to turn more concertedly in that direction.
