Why Egpyt's second goal vs. Argentina was taken back after VAR review

1 hour ago 2

Egypt has Argentina on the ropes in the Round of 16, and the team almost put the defending champions in a two-goal hole.

Early in the second half, Egypt used a breakaway to score what appeared to be its second goal of the match. However, VAR reviewed the play and determined that the goal should be taken off the board due to an incident on the other end of the field.

Egypt scored a second goal just minutes later on a similar breakaway, perhaps alleviating the team's frustration that the previous goal was disallowed. No matter the case, Egypt has put Argentina on the brink of an early exit.

While VAR is available to correct calls on the field, this use of the technology was controversial because the inciting incident occurred so early in the sequence. Here's why Egypt's goal was taken off the board.

Egypt appeared to score its second goal on a beautiful breakaway, but the goal was taken off the board after a VAR review. The officials determined that the play that began the breakaway was instead a foul on Egypt, and Argentina was awarded a free kick instead.

While the play happened at the opposite end of the field, the foul itself caused the breakaway as Egypt was able to build up the attack as a result.
