Why England might have to use Declan Rice at right back due to injury list at World Cup

Injuries can derail even the best teams at the World Cup.

England is currently in a nightmare at the right back position with injuries at the 2026 edition of this tournament, and not at a good time.

On Sunday night, England plays in Mexico City against co-hosts Mexico. The game is being played at altitude, and in front of a raucous Estadio Azteca.

The last thing England needs to be dealing with is injuries, but at right back, that's what's happening.

And before the match is over, don't be surprised if central midfielder Declan Rice spends some time at right back.

Why would England play Declan Rice at right back?

Rice is a smart footballer who has occasionally deputized at right back in his past.

At this point, England doesn't have a lot of options.

Jarell Quansah is expected to get the start at that spot, but he has already been dinged up at this tournament, and there's no guarantee he can go the distance.

If Quansah has to come off, it's not clear they have an option for a like-for-like swap off the bench.

Reece James is out for the tournament, and Djed Spence is now injured -- although the severity with Spence is less certain.

When all is said and done, that could mean Rice at right back, at least for a bit.
