Why England sings 'Wonderwall' after World Cup wins

1 hour ago 1

The world has been introduced to many teams' match traditions at the 2026 World Cup. While Norway's "Ro!" chant has comfortably taken the cake, England has been making their case for singing the Oasis song "Wonderwall" after every victory.

The Manchester, England-based band created one of the Three Lions' songs they sent in to play during the team's matches. After every win, England stands in front of their sea of fans, arm over arm, and belts out the lyrics to the best of their ability.

The reception has been a consistent shout of cheers once finished, and the act seems to be a fan-favorite even outside of England. At the time of writing, "Wonderwall" currently sits at the No. 1 position on Spotify's United Kingdom Top 50 chart.

Here's why The Three Lions sing Wonderwall after each win at the World Cup.

Why is Wonderwall England's song?

England's 2026 World Cup team sings "Wonderwall" with their fans after every win because it is one of their three songs the team submitted, according to USA TODAY.

Prior to the 2026 tournament, FIFA asked teams to submit potential playlists for warmups, goals, and wins, a U.S. spokesperson told the site. England sent in "Wonderwall," along with "Sweet Caroline" as two of their songs.

It seems like almost everyone on the England side of the pitch seems to be in favor of the recent Oasis song's emergence as a team song. English captain Harry Kane said the moment was one of his all-time favorites in a Three Lions kit.

"That was one of my favorite moments ever in an England shirt," Kane said. "I know it's just the first game and we're not getting carried away but that emotional connection with the fans. We see how much it means to them and they see how much it means to us."

"Wonderwall belongs to the people, and it was a magical moment between the people and the players," said Oasis band member Noel Gallagher to The Sun, per the BBC.

Noel's brother and fellow band member Liam Gallagher came out in full support for England ahead of the team's 2026 quarterfinal match against Norway. Here's what Gallagher said after the win sent The Three Lions to the semifinals:

Wonderwall lyrics

Today is gonna be the day
That they're gonna throw it back to you
By now, you should've somehow
Realised what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

Backbeat, the word is on the street
That the fire in your heart is out
I'm sure you've heard it all before
But you never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how

Because maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day
But they'll never throw it back to you
By now, you should've somehow
Realised what you're not to do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads that lead you there were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how

I said maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall
I said maybe (I said maybe)
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall

I said maybe (I said maybe)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (That saves me)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (That saves me)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (That saves me)
