Morocco worked a hard-fought draw in its World Cup opener against Brazil.
Then in its second match, the side abbreviated 'MAR' scored in just the second minute against Scotland.
As this tournament progresses, though, fans will be wondering about that abbreviation.
It's a pretty simple explanation.

Why is Morocco MAR as abbreviation?
This has to do with the French spelling of the country name.
The country name in French is Maroc.
Thus, the first three letters turned into the abbreviation MAR.
That got a lot of spotlight in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In that tournament, Morocco made a run to the semifinals.

That was the furthest an African nation had ever advanced at a World Cup.
Now in 2026 in North America, the Moroccans are hoping to make similar noise again.
