As Lionel Messi falls short in his third FIFA World Cup final appearance, unable to lead Argentina to the first back-to-back World Cup titles since Brazil in the 1950s and 1960s, his rival Cristiano Ronaldo was watching from the couch.

Throughout much of their careers, Messi and Ronaldo have often been compared, with fans and media debating endlessly who is better (by various definitions of the word), who has achieved more, who has the greater résumé and, ultimately, who is the greatest player of all time.

However, as their careers reach the later stages of their athletic abilities, a larger separation has been built between the two that has relegated the debate to the back burner, as most people now innately know who stands alone as the most decorated and exceptional soccer player in history.

As Messi extended his stay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to the final, the disparity between fans of his and those who support Ronaldo only grew.

During the peak of their playing days, there was a genuine and heated debate about which player had the better career.

However, as they have grown into the twilight of their professional era, Messi has aged far better, allowing him to compile the stronger overall résumé, while Ronaldo fades considerably.

Ronaldo's biggest career gap is his overall failure at the FIFA World Cup, where he has struggled mightily. He has just one career knockout-stage goal and reached the semifinals just once as a player, back in 2006 when he was just 21.

Messi, meanwhile, has one title and has reached two other finals, with the potential to add a second championship to his locker with the 2026 final against Spain.

His 91 goals in 2012 are the most for any top-level professional in a single calendar year, and he is the only player to have won multiple World Cup Golden Ball awards as the best player of the tournament.

That is only a sliver of his overall career achievements, which are exceptional.
