Why Tom Pelissero is being let go by ESPN, NFL Network during layoffs

Add Tom Pelissero's name to the list of ESPN and NFL Network employees being let go on Tuesday.

The Athletic's Andrew Marchand reported a bit after 10 a.m. ET that Pelissero has been cut.

Pelissero has been a top-level insider for NFL Network for years, but the merger with ESPN has complicated things.

"While (Karl) Ravech is the biggest-name personality expected to be let go, the most severe layoffs are expected behind the scenes at NFL Network," Marchand writes. "ESPN officially purchased the network in late January in a series of agreements with the NFL that gave the league a 10 percent stake in ESPN. ESPN has spent the past six months sorting out how to make all the pieces from its bases in Bristol and New York coordinate with NFL Network’s Los Angeles operation."

Why is Tom Pelissero being let go?

It appears that ESPN determined that they may have had a bit too much overlap on the NFL insider level.

"On the NFL Network side, Pelissero has been a staple on the platform," Marchand writes. "With the combination of ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFLN’s Ian Rapoport, ESPN moved on from the plugged-in and well-compensated Pelissero."

Given Pelissero's connections within the NFL, it seems like he should be able to land on his feet somewhere.

That doesn't make Tuesday's news any easier, of course.

The aforementioned Karl Ravech, as well as NFL analyst (and former Pittsburgh Steeler) Ryan Clark are among the other big names reported thus far by Marchand as being let go.
