Why Youri Tielemans isn't playing today for Belgium with late injury news

1 hour ago 2

Youri Tielemans has proven already in the 2026 FIFA World Cup that he can be heroic for Belgium.

But on Friday, he won't be starting, and it's a last-minute shock for one of the Red Devils' most important players.

When the initial team sheets came out, Tielemans was there, as expected.

But at kickoff, he won't be on the pitch against Spain for the World Cup quarterfinal.

Why isn't Youri Tielemans playing?

Tielemans was injured during warmups and had to be removed from the lineup.

Hans Vanaken is his replacement in the midfield.

It's not clear if Tielemans will have any chance of getting into the match as a substitute, but the late scratch from the starting 11 suggests that it's unlikely.

Who is Hans Vanaken?

Vanaken is a 33-year old midfielder who stands 6-foot-5.

The veteran plays his club football in Belgium for Club Brugge.

Given his age, he won't be totally stunned by the late assignment, but it'll be the biggest stage of his career.

Vanaken has a goal and two assists so far at this World Cup. Belgium will hope he's up to the task.
