Well, I thought that every Tuesday we would see WWE RAW top Netflix’s top 10 list due to its wide audience tuning into the live program on Monday. But for the first time in the weeks since Netflix starting airing the wrestling show, that hasn’t happened.

A new show has instead launched at the #1 spot, one that has kept WWE RAW at bay at #2 for the first time. It’s a tragic True Crime tale rather than some new scripted program or dating reality show. It’s American Murder: Gabby Petito.

The case is only a few years old, back in 2021 when the 22 year-old Petito was killed by her fiancé Brian Christopher Laundrie during a trek across the United States in a van. She went missing on August 27, 2021 and was found on September 19, with the case becoming a focus of national coverage.

This is a new installment in the “American Murder” series on Netflix, which includes American Murder: The Family Next Door and the American Murder: Lacy Peterson, based on that famed case in 2002. There was also “American Manhunt” about OJ Simpson’s case, particularly him fleeing from authorities.

The Petito series is three episodes that are 40-50 minute each, and the whole thing is more or less the length of a movie. Given that this was less than four years ago, it’s a True Crime story that is quite close to the original killing, which may upset some subscribers more than usual. But True Crime always goes through the debate over whether or not it’s morally appropriate to use these cases. That has also been true for Netflix’s fictionalized series based on Jeffrey Dahmer and The Menendez Brothers, which received immense amounts of pushback while at the same time, being widely watched. Dahmer is one of the most-watch Netflix series in history.

Despite being just three episodes, it seems likely that this show will stay high on Netflix’s list for a while, given how high profile the case was and how much True Crime is consumed by the general public. The much more lighthearted reality series, Love is Blind, is down to #3, but that will climb up once more episodes are released, as they arrive in batches like many other reality series Netflix makes.

So, if you want to tune into the tragic tale, you will not be alone. We’ll see how this one is received by the public or those close to Petito.
