Anthony Volpe's playing time in the Majors with the New York Yankees may be in danger.
The shortstop could see some of his playing opportunities go to New York's top prospect when he is promoted to the Majors.
When will that be? According to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, George Lombard Jr. could make an impact with the big league roster as early as later this season.
Brian Cashman said George Lombard Jr. "might be a choice at some point" in the second half.
Said he's plug-and-play ready to go defensively and has closed the gap he had coming into the season offensively.
Lombard, the Yankees' top prospect on MLB Pipeline, resumed baseball activities recently after spraining two fingers on his left hand a few weeks ago.
In 42 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Lombard is hitting .231/.381/.385 with four home runs and 15 RBIs.
The 21-year-old has stolen eight bases in 11 attempts.
It will probably take an injury to a middle infielder for the Yankees to promote Lombard sometime soon.

Otherwise, the organization clearly feels he's ready for the Majors on defense.
But Cashman mentioning Lombard as a possibility should at least light a spark in Volpe moving forward.
