All-Star catcher from NL West is 'perfect' trade target for Yankees

With the Major League Baseball trade deadline less than two weeks away, the New York Yankees have a clear need at the catcher's position.

With the immense struggles of Austin Wells and the uneven play of J.C. Escarra and Ali Sanchez, there's no clear answer behind the plate.

New York's front office could address this at the deadline by targeting an All-Star catcher from the NL West.

The Athletic's Jim Bowden wrote Friday that the slugger is the perfect trade candidate for the Yankees.

"The Yankees sorely miss their superstar Aaron Judge and desperately need another power bat," Bowden wrote. "In addition, they are getting practically no offense from the catcher position.

"[Hunter] Goodman could share the catching duties with Austin Wells and DH when Wells is behind the plate. Goodman has been an All-Star each of the last two seasons and is on track for his first 40-home run season," Bowden added.

This is not the first time Goodman, an emerging star with the Colorado Rockies, has been connected to the Yankees. The two sides have been linked in trade rumors for the better part of the summer.

With 31 home runs and a .890 OPS in 95 games, the 26-year-old may be the power hitter New York's offense needs. However, he carries an elevated 32.5% strikeout rate into Friday's action.

The Rockies should be in no rush to trade Goodman. His contract includes three years of club control past 2026. But the catcher's trade value may never be higher.
