The Minnesota Timberwolves are doing everything in their power to provide Anthony Edwards with the help he needs to compete at the highest level.
It's been shortcoming after shortcoming for the T-Wolves and Edwards thus far in his career. The Timberwolves hope that Edwards doesn't fall in line with a long list of former players in their organization who go elsewhere to win a championship.
That's the last thing the Wolves want, especially with a player of Edwards caliber. However, as things stand, it's fair to say that Minnesota is no closer to winning the title.
With that being the case, Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report predicts Edwards to be one of the next stars to request a trade.
"Maybe that's why "NBA vultures are swirling around Ant in anticipation of him potentially becoming the next superstar who's available in the trade market," as ESPN's Tim MacMahon relayed on Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective in June. Granted, the Ball blockbuster hadn't happened then, but that trade is hardly guaranteed to get things realigned for Minnesota.
"The Timberwolves are, to their credit, at least willing to take risks in hopes of making this work, but risks can obviously go wrong. And if Minnesota, which hasn't cracked 50 wins since, wobbles out of the gate next season, those vultures will only feel better about their chances of swiping a superstar."
Anthony Edwards future worth monitoring
The Timberwolves selected Edwards with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
The Georgia native has certainly been a revelation to the franchise. While Edwards has failed to get the Timberwolves over the hump, it's not entirely on him.
Minnesota has failed to provide Edwards with the proper help, and one could argue that they got slightly worse this offseason despite acquiring All-Star guard LaMelo Ball.
The Timberwolves have been aggressive and bold in their approach this offseason, and time will tell if it works.
Still, moving off of Julius Randle and Naz Reid leaves the Timberwolves frontcourt thin. What was once their strength is now their weakness, as the only reliable frontcourt player in their possession is Rudy Gobert.
Edwards is heading into his seventh season in the league, and if they fall short once again, the 24-year-old's chances of leaving the Twin Cities would increase.
