The Chicago Bears have resolved two of the biggest issues a team needs to address to be a legitimate playoff contender year after year: head coach and quarterback.
Ben Johnson looks to be a great head coach so far, and Caleb Williams has shown such incredible moments in his two-year NFL career that it's hard not to be excited about his future in the league.
However, one NFL defensive coach in ESPN's Jeremy Fowler's top-10 quarterback rankings poll levied some harsh criticism of Williams' way. This coach said Williams is "wildly erratic."
Caleb Williams called 'wildly erratic' by NFL coach
"Wildly erratic," an NFL defensive coach said. "Doesn't always take the layups and still needs to mature into the position. [He] has some of those 'what is he doing?' plays."
This criticism of Williams is not unfair, as the Bears quarterback does have some bad moments that can hurt the team.
This past season, he had a 20.2% off-target rate, which, as Fowler noted, ranked 37th out of 38 quarterbacks during this past season.
He had a 58.1% completion rating this past season, and while he had just seven interceptions, his overall inconsistencies as a passer made that lower interception count matter a bit less.

But, in this ESPN poll of NFL coaches, executives, and scouts, Williams ranked as the 10th-best QB in the league. The reason is simple: For all of his inconsistencies and worrisome moments, he has some truly stunning playmaking abilities.
The same coach who said Williams is "wildly erratic" also gave the Bears QB some lofty praise for a few different reasons.
"But he also makes plays only he and Mahomes can make," this NFL coach said. "[He] can throw from any angle, deceptively fast when forced to scramble, and he's got the 'it' factor in crunch time."
So, while Williams ranked as the No. 10 QB in the NFL, and received some justified criticism for his inconsistencies and "wildly erratic" play, the ceiling he's shown so far is enough for his sky-high potential to shine through.
