We now know why LeBron James refused to be rushed into a final free agency decision

LeBron James is officially a free agent now. Thirteen days after informing the Los Angeles Lakers he'd suit up elsewhere for his 24th NBA season, James is still checking his every option and, according to his agent, taking money out of the equation is making the call tougher, not easier.

The 41-year-old wrapped an eight-year run with the Purple and Gold, the longest stint of his career, capped by a title in the 2020 bubble. He posted his farewell on social media, calling it an honor to wear the jersey and saying he hoped he made a few people proud along the way. Lakers governor Jeanie Buss returned the sentiment in a statement, thanking James for the banner and the records he broke in L.A.

Since the free agency negotiating window opened, Klutch Sports has fielded interest from around the league. While agent Rich Paul initially received calls from just 10 to 12 teams, that number has since ballooned to 27 teams making inquiries.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Minnesota Timberwolves are among those making real pushes, reportedly. However, this time, King James has instructed Paul to bring back every option so he can find a roster built perfectly to chase a fifth ring.

Speaking on the Nightcap Show, Paul explained, “When you remove the money, now you actually have clarity. You never seen an athlete been in this position. Where have you seen an athlete be in this position where he can sit there and say, ‘Oh don’t worry about the money.’”

"When you remove the money, now you actually have clarity," Paul added, before adding that no athlete has ever been in this exact position 24 years into a career, evaluating fit and title odds instead of dollars.

Rich Paul says LeBron James not making the decision about the money, that actually makes the decision harder:

Paul also confirmed, “We’re never going to be rushed to do anything and we damn sure don’t care about what nobody has to say or think. Not at this point. We didn’t work this hard to get here now… when the man’s ready to make his decision, he makes a decision.”

As of now, no team is leading the race. The Warriors offer the chance to play with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. However, they lack a clear trade path to bring Anthony Davis along with James. The Cavs are pitching a homecoming backed by a deep, well-built roster.

Meanwhile, the Heat just added Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the 76ers feature a strong core of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. James, who turns 42 in December, is expected to make his decision in the coming weeks.
