Brittney Griner sparks coaching buzz with latest off-court move during WNBA season

2 hours ago 2

Brittney Griner is still making a major impact on the floor for the Connecticut Sun, but her latest social media post has WNBA fans thinking about what could come after her playing career. The veteran center, who has enjoyed another productive season in Connecticut, revealed this week that she's spending time studying game film and learning the finer points of coaching. The post quickly sparked excitement among fans, many of whom believe Griner could eventually become a successful WNBA head coach.

While Griner remains focused on helping the Sun this season, her willingness to dive into the coaching side of basketball offered a glimpse at a possible next chapter once her playing days eventually come to an end.

Griner reveals she's taking coaching seriously

Griner shared a video on Threads showing herself breaking down film from the Indiana Fever's game against the Chicago Sky. Rather than casually watching the matchup, the Sun star explained she was evaluating Indiana's post play and putting together scouting notes, adding that she plans to continue watching more games as she learns the coaching process.

"Taking this coaching thing seriously," Griner wrote alongside the video.

The post immediately generated plenty of positive reactions from basketball fans. Several commenters said they could easily envision Griner leading a WNBA team one day, with one fan writing, "Coach BG got a nice ring to it!"

Others echoed similar sentiments, saying they would love to see Griner on the sidelines after her playing career concludes. The response reflected the respect Griner has earned throughout one of the most accomplished careers in league history.

Another strong season for the Connecticut Sun star

Griner's coaching aspirations come while she's still performing at a high level for Connecticut. Through the first half of the 2026 season, she has averaged 13.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.8 blocks per game. She leads the Sun in scoring and blocks while ranking among the team's leaders in rebounds and assists.

She also added another milestone to her Hall of Fame résumé earlier this season, becoming the WNBA's all-time leader in blocked shots during Connecticut's June 22 game against the Chicago Sky. After spending the 2025 season with the Atlanta Dream, Griner joined the Sun ahead of the 2026 campaign and has quickly become one of the team's veteran leaders.

Whether coaching eventually becomes her next full-time role remains to be seen, but judging by the reaction to her latest post, plenty of WNBA fans already believe she'd be a natural fit on the sidelines once her decorated playing career reaches its conclusion.
