The Houston Rockets made an aggressive move during the 2026 NBA Draft by trading up with the New York Knicks to select Ohio State point guard Bruce Thornton with the 31st overall pick. Shortly after acquiring him, Houston reinforced its confidence in the young guard by signing him to a four-year contract worth $9.3 million.
Thornton now joins a backcourt led by veteran point guard Fred VanVleet. In a recent interview, the rookie revealed that VanVleet served as one of his biggest basketball influences throughout the past season.
“Last year, I was watching a lot of Fred VanVleet highlights. It’s crazy how everything works out, and now we’re in the same locker room. So all the questions I have, I can ask,” Thornton said.
The mentorship opportunity appears to be an ideal fit for both players. Like VanVleet, Thornton is considered an undersized guard who relies on toughness and basketball intelligence rather than overwhelming athleticism.
In addition to learning from VanVleet, Thornton is also expected to benefit from the presence of newly acquired veteran Marcus Smart while competing for developmental minutes alongside fellow young guard and lottery pick Reed Sheppard.
Houston has already committed fully to Thornton by guaranteeing the first year of his rookie contract. The Rockets officially announced the signing through a social media post and also confirmed that the rookie will represent the franchise at the 2026 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, which runs from July 9 through July 19.
Thornton entered the NBA following an outstanding collegiate career at Ohio State, where he established himself as one of the nation's premier point guards. He made program history as the Buckeyes' only four-time team captain.
