Caitlin Clark's historic 45-10 game has an asterisk no one wants to talk about

After two days dominated by discourse over referees, Caitlin Clark became the first player in WNBA history to record a 40-point, 10-assist game.

Clark berated the refereeing crew from Wednesday's loss to the Golden State Valkyries before and after that game. Not even 48 hours later, the Indiana Fever superstar had set a career-high in points...and a career-high in free-throw attempts.

There are few coincidences when it comes to Clark, who had received public backing from Dick Vitale and others after she complained of a contusion sustained during the Golden State game.

That isn't to say Clark wasn't genuinely impressive in Friday's 110-107 win over the Seattle Storm.

In a rarity for the three-time All-Star, Clark was an efficient 11-of-18 from the field, and she became the fastest player in league history to drill 200 career 3-pointers.

Friday also marked the fifth time Clark had notched double-digit assists, and she did all of this in only 29 minutes against a Storm team that is a respectable eighth in defensive rating.

But there is little divorcing Clark's stats -- specifically, her 17 free throws made from 19 tries -- from the campaign of the previous two days that created the climate for them.

Such is Clark's talent that she is clearly capable of huge numbers, night in and night out. Even NBA commissioner Adam Silver has remarked on Clark becoming something of a "political football" given all the noise around her.

The manner in which Clark herself continues contributing to that discourse delegitimizes the league -- and threatens to delegitimize her, even after the single best game of her three-year WNBA career.
